The Mid-Sask 60/40 (45.2-0-0) is exclusively available at Mid-Sask Ag Services locations. The Mid-Sask 60/40 is a blend of urea and ESN to meet your crops nitrogen requirements. ESN (Environmentally Smart Nitrogen) has been designed to be a controlled release N product to meet the crops demand. As you can see from the chart showing N uptake in canola, the plant demand increases at 21 days and peaks at 65 days into the growing season. The polymer coating on the ESN is designed to release N at 40-50 days into the growing season (when the crops demand is the highest).

How does it work?
This blend will supply early season N to get your crop off to a quick start for initial establishment. Many crops run out of N later in the season and prematurely ripen and tend to have all N applied go into yield production and have none left for protein. The ESN in the Mid-Sask 60/40 will allow your crops to have both yield and protein. ESN is a polymer coated urea granule that acts as a barrier to prevent N losses. The unique design of the ESN allows water through the coating and solubilizes the urea inside. Once solubilized the N will remain in this form until the solution diffuses out of the coating into the soil. During the act of diffusion the N will move from a high concentration in the capsule into the surrounding soil. Warm temperatures and moisture will accommodate this.
Benefits of the Mid-Sask 60/40
- Increases yield and protein
- ESN release matches the crop uptake. Early in the growing season when N demand isn’t high the release of N from the polymer coating will be slow. This means your N is less at risk from losses. As the soil temperature and moisture content of the soil increases nitrogen will begin to be released.

- In trials conducted at the Melfort Research Farm yield benefits have been greater than 3 bu/ac when 60lbs+/ac of 100% ESN are applied vs. 100% urea.
- Saves you time
- ESN doesn’t absorb moisture from the air so growers that have blends stored on farm can see the benefit of a free flowing product that doesn’t hang up in bins.
- It allows you to complete all your N applications in one pass for the entire growing season.
- Crop safety
- ESN will allow you to place more N safely in the soil with less risk of seedling burn. The coating creates a barrier between the N and the seed so there is not a salt effect.
- ESN will protect your investment.
- With so many concerns in the spring and the rising crop input investment you want to protect your N application. N losses caused by leaching, volatilization, denitrification will be reduced.
- Since the crop demand and uptake are met at the same time it means only the N that the crop will require will be taken up.
- Marginal land can be used to the maximum potential by reducing N loss and preventing seedling damage due to high salt index in low organic matter soils.
- Blendable
- The Mid-Sask 60/40 can be blended with all other dry fertilizer products for full crop nutrition needs.
What crops can I use the blend on?
- Wheat & Winter Wheat – this blend is an excellent fit for these crops as it will allow for protein production at the end of the season.
- Canola - this crop has a high nutrient demand, why risk putting down all the N down in an available form at the beginning of the season?
- Pasture/forages – broadcasting the Mid-Sask 60/40 will reduce the risk of rapid N volatilization.
- The Mid-Sask 60/40 is not recommended for application on malt barley as high protein levels might be created and cause the sample to be rejected.
Using The Mid-Sask 60/40 blend is just plain smart!
